Professional Biography

I received my Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in May 1999. My dissertation, "Examination of subtle manifestations of sex discrimination in initial job interviews," entailed detailed analysis of nonverbal communication between the interviewer and a job applicant to better understand subtle sex discrimination. My dissertation advisor was Dr. David V. Day.When nearing the completion of my Ph.D. I decided to gain experience in a small multidisciplinary organization (Aptima, Inc.) that does contract-based technology and training development. I began working for them full time in 1999 and successfully applied I/O psychology to problems such as developing web-based training to prepare leaders for multicultural settings. I have also witnessed, first-hand, the organizational processes that permeate small businesses (e.g., the "growing pains" that occur when an organization goes from 7 to 107 employees; the problems that occur when teamwork is promoted, yet individual behavior is rewarded; the strain that occurs as a flat organization becomes more hierarchical). It is there that I came to understand the importance of personal experience as an educational tool. At Salem State University I have found the perfect opportunity to use these experiences to train the next generation of I/O Psychologists.
